Now that gay marriage has been legalized in New York, "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris announced his engagement via Twitter.

Harris tweeted that he and his partner David Burtka proposed to each other about five years ago and have been wearing engagement rings since then.

It all started Friday night when Harris tweeted his excitement after the New York senate passed the Marriage Equality Bill.

"It PASSED! Marriage equality in NY!! Yes!! Progress!! Thank you everyone who worked so hard on this !!  A historic night!" he tweeted.

As it was first noted by PopEater, one of Burtka followers tweeted, "So propose to your bf" to which Burtka responded "I've already proposed, he said yes! Thank god! He proposed to me as well. I said yes! Thank god!"

"David and I did propose to each other, but over five years ago! We've been wearing engagement rings for ages, waiting for an available date."
