Motorola Droid Bionic, the smartphone from Motorola expected to launch next month, has gained momentum with hype that's been building since the beginning of the year. But the Samsung Galaxy S2, which has seen sales of more than 3 million units without a single sale in the U.S., is well-positioned to lead the smartphone race.

Recently, the Motorola Droid Bionic was spotted in a Best Buy Mobile promotional shot that's making the rounds on the Web. The leaked promo described Droid Bionic to be a ferocious force and an unstoppable powerful device. But the biggest question remains whether the powerful smartphone will last, even if it makes a splash in the beginning. If we consider HTC's Thunderbolt 4G LTE smartphone, it was in fact outselling even Apple's iPhone 4 for a while at Verizon.

According to BTIG research, the reign of the HTC Thunderbolt was short-lived due to its very short battery life. Now, the Thunderbolt is the best-selling Android phone at 10 percent of Verizon stores while 90 percent now give that distinction to the Samsung Droid Charge. Both Samsung Droid Charge (1600 mAh battery) and HTC Thunderbolt (1400 mAh battery) are single core processor smartphones.

However, Motorola Droid Bionic comes with 1.2 GHz dual core processor and it will be featured in Verizon’s 4G LTE network. The original Motorola Droid Bionic showcased early this year had 1930 mAh battery. Even if Droid Bionic retains the same battery, with a powerful processor and 4G LTE network, it is to be seen if the smartphone will stand the test of time. If the battery life clicks for Motorola Droid Bionic, then most probably Samsung Galaxy S2 will have very stiff competitor waiting in the wings.

Another thing that may haunt Motorola Droid Bionic is the availability of an unlocked boot loader option. Motorola recently said it would unlock boot loaders in Q3 or Q4. This wasn’t actualized in the case in Motorola Droid 3, available July 14 with a locked-down boot loader. Usually Motorola locks the boot loaders on its smartphones, which prevents owners from fully customizing the device. As Droid 3 is cut off from Verizon’s unlimited data plan, Motorola Droid Bionic will face the same fate.

That said, Motorola Droid Bionic will only be featured in Verizon, but Samsung Galaxy S2 will be found in all the four major carriers in US. Verizon network will have its hand on “Function”, Sprint version will be known as “Within” and AT&T version is “Attain.” And latest news shows that T-Mobile is expecting the “Hercules” version.

According to the latest rumors Samsung Hercules for T-Mobile is expected to come with 4.5-inch display similar to Samsung Infuse 4G, 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm APQ8060 processor, 8-megapixel camera, NFC support and category 24 HSDPA capability to exceed the max speeds of 42Mbps downstream which will make the Hercules the fastest HSDPA plus in the smartphone market.

All those are just speculations for now, but MobileCityOnline website, a trusted place to order unlocked equipment, last month said Samsung Hercules 4G unlocked for pre-order retailing at $699.99 while showcasing it as $799.99. Also right below is the listed page about the specifications of Samsung Hercules that shows key product features like 8-megapixel camera, GPS with A-GPS support, 16 GB internal storage, 1.2 GHz dual core CPU, front-facing camera and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n DLNA support.

Is Samsung Galaxy S2 Preferred Over Motorola Droid Bionic?

These specifications match those of Samsung Galaxy S2 line going to other carriers. Also they show a different image of Samsung Hercules, as the display of the smartphone may not be 4.5-inch but it may sport a 4.3-inch display which is a good news as the size is ideal for a smartphone.

With so many options, Samsung Galaxy S2 seems to be in a very advantageous position but that doesn’t mean Motorola Droid Bionic is less inferior, because speed does matter.

Additionally, the latest news shows that smartphones were one of many items that were placed aboard the shuttle Atlantis by NASA. The STS-135 mission is the final flight of the Space Shuttle Program. Google Android and iPhone 4 smartphones are the two branded phones that are configured for several experiments. The Samsung Nexus S device, with a little technical touch, has been upgraded to act as robot to carry out basic tasks for the crew members.
