BASKING RIDGE, N.J. - Verizon Wireless said Monday it has obtained a permanent injunction prohibiting a Florida-based marketing company from sending spam to its cellular phone customers.
The ruling, handed down by U.S. District Court in Trenton, N.J., prohibits Specialized Programming and Marketing LLC from sending unsolicited text messages to Verizon customers, and requires the firm to pay $200,000 in damages, Verizon said. The Holly Hill, Fla.-based company sent nearly 100,000 such text messages, according to Verizon.
Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications Inc. and Vodafone Group PLC.
Shares of Verizon Communications rose 7 cents to $38.49 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange, while U.S.-listed shares of Vodafone added 3 cents to $28.84 on the Big Board.
