Chordiant Expects 1Q Loss to Narrow

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Business software maker Chordiant Software Inc. on Thursday predicted its fiscal first-quarter loss will narrow, based on preliminary results.

For the quarter that ends Dec. 31, Chordiant expects a loss of between $400,000 and $2.6 million, or a penny to 8 cents per share. In the same quarter last year, the company reported a loss of $10.7 million, or 14 cents per share.

On an adjusted basis, Chordiant expects to report between a loss of 4 cents per share and profit of 3 cents per share. In the year-ago quarter, the company's adjusted loss totaled 3 cents per share.

Chordiant expects revenue of between $27.5 million and $29 million for the period, compared with revenue of $22.9 million in the year-ago period.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial anticipate first-quarter adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share on revenue of $32 million.

Chordiant also reiterated its fiscal 2008 outlook for earnings of between 46 cents and 61 cents per share or between 60 cents and 76 cents on an adjusted basis on revenue of between $140 million and $150 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect fiscal year adjusted earnings of 74 cents per share on $147.1 million in revenue.

The company is scheduled to report its fiscal first-quarter results Feb. 7.

Chordiant shares added 98 cents to $9.10 in extended electronic trading after losing 15 cents in the regular session.
