The company earned $40.2 million or $1.69 per share compared to $6.4 million or 27 cents per share in the same quarter last year.

Sales rose 62.5 percent to $223.7 million compared to $137.7 million last year.

Chief Executive Fred Adams Jr. said U.S. egg prices reached record levels during the quarter with strong exports to Europe, the U.K., Japan and the Middle East.

However, he said feed costs remain high with demand for corn used in ethanol production adding to price pressures.

Cal Maine is one of the largest producers of factory-farmed eggs in the U.S., with sales and distribution in 29 states.
