WASHINGTON - Educational software company Blackboard Inc. said Monday it expects its fourth-quarter profit to rise, helped by strong licensing sales.

The company expects profits in the range of 11 to 13 cents per share, compared with 1 cent per share for the same quarter last year.
Excluding one-time items, the company expected to earn in the range 23 to 25 cents per share, compared with 22 cents per share in the same quarter last year.
The company expects sales in the range of $62 million to $63 million, compared with sales of $51.4 million last year.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect earnings of 25 cents per share on sales of $61.95 million.
Analysts typically exclude one-time items.
The company reported strong licensing agreements for its "Blackboard Learning System" and other titles.
Blackboard also said it expects 2008 sales of $278 million to $284 million, including revenue from its proposed purchase of mass messaging company NTI Group Inc., which it also announced Monday.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect 2008 sales of $279.1 million.
