SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - Sprint affiliate iPCS Inc. said Wednesday it added about 7,800 net subscribers in the fourth quarter, a rate it called disappointing.

The company ended December with 629,900 customers. Its average monthly churn, or subscriber turnover, was 2.7 percent.
IPCS said the subscriber growth through its Sprint-controlled and national channels "continued to be weak," which led to lower-than-expected subscriber growth.
Last week, Sprint Nextel Corp. reported fourth-quarter subscriber numbers well below Wall Street's expectations, and said it will slash 4,000 jobs to cut costs. The beleaguered wireless carrier's stock lost nearly a quarter of its value following the announcement.
IPCS sells wireless products and services under the Sprint brand in 80 markets, including Illinois, Michigan and Pennsylvania.
