NDS 2Q Profit Jumps 33 Percent

NEW YORK - NDS Group PLC, a News Corp. unit that makes pay-television cards and software, said Tuesday fiscal second-quarter earnings rose 33 percent on higher revenue from service agreements.

Net income in the three months ended Dec. 31 climbed to $40.4 million, or 68 cents per share, from $30.3 million, or 52 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

Revenue rose 30 percent to $214.9 million from $165.1 million. Service agreements for software that provides pay access to television signals rose 22 percent.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected profit of 61 cents per share on revenue of $193.9 million.

The U.K.-based company's major customer is satellite TV operator DirecTV Group Inc., which was controlled by Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. until recently.

In premarket trading, NDS U.S.-listed shares added $4.19, or 8.6 percent, at $52.98. It closed at $48.79 on Monday.
