NCR, which also makes checkout scanners for the retail industry, said it earned $79 million, or 43 cents a share, in the quarter ended Dec. 31 compared with $174 million, or 96 cents a share, for the same period in 2006.

Excluding the results of Teradata Corp. and charges, NCR would have earned $86 million, or 47 cents per share, for the quarter compared with $95 million, or 52 cents a share, in 2006.

NCR spun off Teradata, which makes data warehousing software, Oct. 1.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 52 cents a share. Those estimates typically exclude one-time items.

Its revenue rose 13 percent to $1.52 billion from $1.34 billion in 2006.

NCR employs about 21,000 workers worldwide.
