CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Akamai Technologies Inc., which provides technology for the distribution of digital media, said Friday a jury ruled in its favor in a patent suit against Limelight Networks Inc., sending its stock higher in afternoon trading.
Akamai said jury in the U.S. District Court of Massachusetts ruled Limelight Networks infringed a content delivery patent asserted by Akamai. The jury awarded Akamai $45.5 million in damages, plus interest.
Akamai said it plans to ask the court to issue a permanent injunction prohibiting Limelight from continuing to sell infringing devices.
The jury rejected Limelight's defense that Akamai's patent was invalid, according to Akamai. Representatives for Tempe, Ariz.-based Limelight weren't immediately available to comment.
Akamai filed its lawsuit in 2006. The verdict followed a three-week trial in Boston.
In afternoon trading, shares of Akamai Technologies jumped $2.29, or 6.8 percent, to $35.77. Limelight shares plunged $2.24, or 35.2 percent, to $4.13. Limelight shares earlier set a year low of $3.82, after trading in a 52-week range of $5.60 to $24.33.
