Google Maps Receives Restrictions from U.S. Military

The restriction came shortly after the street view images of Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, appeared on Google Maps.

Google removed the images after receiving a request from the military which said Sam Houston was not open to the public.

"Our policy is to stay on public roads, but a driver broke that policy," said Larry Yu, Google spokesman who emphasizing that the act was against Google's policy to seek access to military installations and private facilities.

"It has operational risk for force protection and the safety of personnel who work on the base, said Garr Ross, public affairs for North America Aerospace Defense Command.

Ross added that the restriction applies to all other companies that acquire images for similar purposes.
