LONDON - The U.S. dollar was mostly lower Monday against other major currencies in European trading. Gold prices rose.
The euro traded at $1.5739 in midday trading in Europe, up from $1.5687 late Friday in New York. The euro rose as high as $1.5904 earlier Monday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.5717.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late rates Friday in New York, included 96.89 Japanese yen, down from 99.21; 0.9820 Swiss francs, down from 1.000; and 0.9867 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0137.
The British pound was quoted at $2.0046, down from $2.0218.
Later, in midday New York trading, the dollar bought 96.90 yen and 0.9866 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $2.0011.
Gold traded in London at $1009.70 per troy ounce, up from $998.20 late Friday. In Zurich, gold traded at $1012.10 bid per troy ounce, up from $998.55.
Silver traded in London at $20.44, down from $20.58.
