Dollar Mostly Falls, Gold Surges
LONDON - The U.S. dollar was mostly lower Monday against other major currencies in European trading. Gold prices rose.
The euro traded at $1.5769 in midday trading in Europe, up from $1.5687 late Friday in New York. The euro rose as high as $1.5904 earlier Monday.
Other dollar rates cxompared with late rates Friday in New York included: 96.57 Japanese yen, down from 99.21; 0.9820 Swiss francs, down from 1.0004, and 0.9889 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0137.
The British pound was quoted at $2.0096, down from $2.0218.
Gold traded in London at $1,023.50 per troy ounce, up from $998.20 late Friday. In Zurich, gold traded at $1,021.55 bid per troy ounce, up from $998.55.
Silver traded in London at $21.20, up from $20.58.
