Insurers in the financial guaranty and bond insurance sectors fell the most.
Shares of Ambac Financial Group Inc. fell 77 cents, or 12.4 percent, to $5.45 in afternoon trading.
MBIA Inc. shares fell 74 cents, or 6.8 percent, to $10.20.
Allstate Corp., fell 20 cents to $45.54.
Among the few gainers, shares of Travelers Cos. rose 11 cents to $45.03.
