S&P 500 Leaders & Laggards: JBL APA CCU

NEW YORK - Jabil Circuit Inc., Clear Channel Communications Inc. and Washington Mutual Inc. declined on Wednesday, weighing the Standard & Poor's 500 index to a lower finish.

The S&P 500 lost 11.86 to 1,341.13.

Jabil, which manufactures electronic components, declined $2.09, or 18.4 percent, to $9.29. Jabil warned that third-quarter earnings will miss Wall Street expectations.

Shares of radio station operator Clear Channel lost $5.64, or 17.3 percent, to $26.92, following reports that a proposed $19.5 billion buyout may fall through.

Washington Mutual retreated $1.20, or 9.5 percent, to $11.50, following other financial stocks lower.

Among the gainers, oil and gas producer Apache Corp. rose $6.81, or 6 percent, to $119.75, following lower-than-expected inventories of crude oil.

Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. rose $5.03, or 5.4 percent, to $97.44.

Oil service provider BJ Services Co. added $1.35, or 5.1 percent, to $27.78.
