LONDON - The U.S. dollar was mostly lower against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday morning. Gold rose.

The euro traded at $1.5724, up from $1.5596 late Tuesday in New York.

_1.0140 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0167

The British pound was quoted at $1.9964, down from $2.000.

Gold traded in London at $945.75 per troy ounce, up from $933.35 late Tuesday.

In Zurich, gold traded at $946.30 bid per troy ounce, up from $928.15.

Silver opened in London at $17.84, up from $17.70.
