For the three months ended Feb. 29, Schiff posted a profit of $4 million, or 14 cents per share, compared with $3.2 million, or 12 cents per share, a year earlier.
Sales rose nearly 3 percent to $46.2 million from $45 million, helping offset an approximate 19 percent rise in expenses.
"Our third quarter net sales increase was driven by solid branded growth, partially offset by a temporary decline in our private label business," Chief Executive Bruce Wood said in a statement. "With respect to profitability, we were encouraged with the significant quarter-over-quarter improvement in our gross and operating margins."
