Actavis Gets Generic Glaxo Drug OK

NEW YORK - Privately held drug developer Actavis Group Inc. said Friday it received Food and Drug Administration approval for generic versions of the antidepressant Wellbutrin and the smoking cessation drug Zyban.

The generic drug maker said it will start shipping the drugs immediately.

Canada-based Biovail Corp. makes Wellbutrin, which is sold by U.K.-based GlaxoSmithKline Plc. Zyban is made by GlaxoSmithKline.

GlaxoSmithKline reported Wellbutrin sales of 529 million British pounds ($1.05 billion) for 2007.

In afternoon trading, shares of Biovail fell 25 cents to $10.67 while GlaxoSmithKline fell 22 cents to $42.36.
