ATLANTA - Acuity Brands Inc., which makes commercial and residential lighting fixtures, said Thursday fiscal second-quarter earnings rose 40 percent, reflecting a better product mix and more favorable pricing.

Acuity, whose brands include Lithonia, Holophane and Peerless, said net income in the three months ended Feb. 29 rose to $34.1 million, or 82 cents per share, from $24.4 million, or 55 cents per share, in the year-ago period.
The result exceeded average expectations on Wall Street for profit of 68 cents per share, according to Thomson Financial.
Higher prices and favorable exchange rates helped sales rise 9 percent to $482.6 million, from $444.3 million last year. Analysts expected sales of $470.2 million.
Acuity Brands' shares rose $4.62, or 10.6 percent, to $47.87 in early trading.
