LONDON - The U.S. dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies in European trading Thursday morning. Gold prices rose.

The euro was quoted at $1.5562, down from $1.5664 late Wednesday in New York.

Other dollar rates compared with late Wednesday:

_1.0175 Swiss francs, up from 1.0099

_1.0137 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0172

The British pound was quoted at $1.9783, down from $1.9885.

Gold traded in London at $901.80 bid per troy ounce at midmorning, up from $889.70 on Wednesday.

In Zurich, gold traded at $895.90 bid per troy ounce, up from $888.10.

Silver traded in London at $17.19 bid per troy ounce, down from $17.24.
