CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Capital One Financial Corp.'s first-quarter profit fell 19 percent, weighed down by pressures on the company's U.S. businesses, the credit card company said Thursday.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) United Technologies Corp., which makes Otis elevators, Sikorsky helicopters and Carrier air conditioners, said Thursday its first-quarter earnings rose 26 percent as the weak dollar boosted profit throughout the business.

WASHINGTON (AP) Marriott International Inc. said Thursday its first-quarter profit dropped 34 percent as the slowing U.S. economy took a toll on its hotels. The results were in line with Wall Street expectations, but the hotel operator lowered its forecast for the full year.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) Intuitive Surgical Inc. said Thursday its first-quarter profit surged 88 percent due to strong results from all divisions, including rising sales of its da Vinci robotic surgical system.

NEW YORK (AP) Newspaper publishers The New York Times Co. and Media General Inc. reported first-quarter losses Thursday as revenues tumbled because of the slumping economy and more advertising losses to the Internet.
