BEIJING - China's Railways Ministry plans to transport 10 million tons of grain from northeast to south in order to stabilize rice prices in south China, the Chinese official media CCTV reported today. The plan will be launched on May 1 and end on June 30, totally 60days.

Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning, the three provinces located in northeast China contains 16 percent of the nation's arable. Their grain output last year reached 83.1 billion kilograms, 16.6 percent of the country's total grain output. The Northeast area houses China's most important grain production bases.

However, the Northeast producing areas has suffered by problems due to the rail transport difficulties. The area has long suffered from a lack of rail infrastructure.

At the same time, the gain supply in the whole country is facing a shortfall due to seasonal factors.

Railways Ministry's officer said that the railway section will speed up strategic grain loading and improve vehicle efficiency to protect the domestic market grain supply and national food security.
