ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A federal judge has ordered the Interior Department to decide within 16 days whether polar bears should be listed as a threatened species because of global warming.
U.S. District Judge Claudia Wilken is agreeing with conservation groups that the department missed a January deadline.
The judge's order dated Monday rejects a government request for further delay until June 30. The judge is based in California but her ordered was received Tuesday in Anchorage.
Wilken says the government has offered no specific facts that would justify any delay other than citing the general complexity of finalizing a rule.
