The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and was located at a depth of about 5 miles. It was felt 40 miles away in remote Adak (pronounced A-dack). There have been no reports of damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake was 1,225 miles southwest of Anchorage.

The West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer says the earthquake was not large enough to generate a tsunami that would threaten Alaska or the western coasts of the U.S. and Canada.
