Whirlpool said it is asking for injunctive relief and monetary damages in the suit it filed with the district court in Delaware.
An LG spokesman said the company did not have any immediate comment on the matter.
In January, Whirlpool asked the International Trade Commission to issue an order to stop LG from selling and importing products into the U.S. that it claims infringe on five of its patents related to its refrigerator business. Such an order would affect the majority of refrigerators sold by LG in the U.S., Whirlpool said.
