Tenet Healthcare swings to first-quarter loss

DALLAS - Hospital operator Tenet Healthcare says it swung to a first-quarter loss from year-ago profit, hurt by a loss from divested operations and a hefty litigation charge.

The Dallas-based company lost $31 million, or 6 cents per share, on sales of $2.37 billion, compared with profit of $75 million, or 16 cents per share, on revenue of $2.22 billion in the first quarter of last year.

The latest quarter includes losses from discontinued operations of $21 million, or 4 cents per share, and a litigation charge of $30 million, or 6 cents per share. Excluding items, the company would have earned 4 cents per share in the latest period.

Thomson Financial says analysts expected earnings of 1 penny per share and sales of $2.35 billion.
