COLUMBUS, Ohio - Big Lots Inc., which specializes in buying closeout items from other retailers and selling them at a discount, said Thursday its fiscal first-quarter same-store sales climbed 3.4 percent partly due to deals with a furniture maker and a national drugstore chain.

The company said the deals helped boost same-store sales by 1.5 percent to 2 percent.

Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least two years, is a key indicator of retailer performance since it measures growth at existing stores rather than newly opened ones.

Sales were strongest in the consumables and furniture categories, Big Lots said.

Total sales for the period ended May 3 grew 2.1 percent to $1.14 billion from $1.12 billion.

Big Lots plans to report first-quarter financial results on May 29. The company currently runs 1,354 Big Lots stores in 47 states.
