NEW YORK - Shares of electrical equipment companies closed higher Thursday as the broader market gained ground on better-than-expected April retail sales figures and a report that jobless claims fell last week.

Regal Beloit Corp., up 38 cents to $44.01.
Cooper Industries Ltd., up 27 cents to $43.37.
Tyco Electronics Ltd., up 34 cents to $38.24.
Commscope Inc., up $1.49, or 3 percent, to $50.59.
