Reid said that the growth reflected the desire of workers for help with what can be the daunting task of choosing investments and rebalancing them over time.

"What is catching on is that people recognize this is a great way to get one-stop shopping for asset allocation and advice in a 401k and, to some extent, an IRA," he said.
