PHILADELPHIA - Mothers Work Inc. said Thursday its April same-store sales rose 2.3 percent on favorable weather and a better product assortment, however, the maternity apparel retailer said results were somewhat hurt by an earlier Easter holiday and one less Sunday than in the year-ago period.

Same-store sales, or sales at stores open at least a year, is a key indicator of retailer performance since it measures growth at existing stores rather than newly opened ones.

Total monthly sales dipped 0.3 percent to $52.2 million from $52.3 million due to some store closings and fewer Sears leased department sales. The company's leased departments within Sears will close before the end of the third quarter as previously announced.

Mothers Work ran 1,529 maternity locations as of April 30, including 758 stores mostly under the Motherhood Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Mimi Maternity and Destination Maternity brands.
