Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Officials for 3M said the addition of Quest, along with its sound monitoring technology, broadens its presence in the industrial hygiene and safety equipment markets.
The company's noise dosimeters, which are worn while a person is working, prevent occupational hearing loss by measuring noise levels at each location an employee visits, 3M said.
Quest employs about 95 people at its headquarters in Oconomowoc, Wis.
The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter, subject to customary closing conditions.
Shares of 3M fell 55 cents to $76.40 in morning trading.
