The contract is from the Army's Advanced Affordable Turbine Engine program, which is charged with improving the horsepower and fuel efficiency of a new 3,000 shaft horsepower turboshaft engine. Shaft horsepower measures the power delivered to the propeller of an aircraft.

The engine is slated to replace the T700 engine now powering UH-60 Black Hawk and AH-64 Apache helicopters, the companies said.

In morning trading, Honeywell shares fell 32 cents to $59.04. Shares of United Technologies Corp., Pratt & Whitney's parent company, fell $1.39 to $72.67.
