NEW YORK - Shares of large pharmaceutical companies opened lower Friday as the broader market tumbled over wider-than-expected losses at insurer American International Group Inc. and a spike in oil prices.

Merck & Co., down 41 cents to $38.68
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co., down 79 cents to $22.
Schering-Plough, down 26 cents to $18.45.
