Carmike Cinemas reports wider 1st-quarter loss

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Carmike Cinemas Inc. said Monday that its loss widened in the first quarter as the movie theater operator experienced some box office weakness and expenses increased.

The company reported a loss of $4.3 million, or 34 cents per share, compared with a loss of $3.7 million, or 30 cents per share, in the same quarter a year ago.

Quarterly revenue grew 8 percent to $117.8 million from $109.3 million.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expected a loss of 34 cents per share on revenue of $113.3 million.

Operating costs and expenses grew 8 percent to $111.6 million as increased film exhibition, concession and other costs offset a reduction in general and administrative expenses.

Meanwhile, admissions revenue rose 10 percent to $78.9 million and concessions and other revenue grew 4 percent to $38.9 million.

Carmike shares fell 11 cents to $8.33 in after-hours trading, after gaining 16 cents to close at $8.44.
