NEW YORK - Shares of investment banks rose Monday morning as broader markets increased modestly and London-based HSBC Holdings PLC said first-quarter profits improved despite the bank still taking a mortgage-related write-down.

Bear Stearns Cos. rose 11 cents to $10.34.
Goldman Sachs Group Inc. rose 3 cents to $188.12.
Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. rose 6 cents to $43.60.
Merrill Lynch & Co. rose 22 cents to $48.67.
Morgan Stanley rose 21 cents to $46.17.
