LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) - President Evo Morales has approved an Aug. 10 recall election for himself and Bolivia's nine governors, gambling that voters will re-elect him just two years into his five-year term.
Morales has signed the bill amid a fierce political battle over his draft constitution giving Bolivia's indigenous population greater power. Bolivia's leader says he "does not fear the voters."
He first proposed the measure last December. The measure approved Monday requires Morales and nine state governors to win both more votes and a greater percentage of support than they did in the 2005 elections. If they fall short, they will be removed from office and new general elections will be held.
