NEW YORK - American Science and Engineering Inc., an X-ray inspection system maker, said Tuesday it received a $9.2 million contract to supply a Latin American customs agency.

The Billerica, Mass., company will deliver "multiple" Z Backscatter vans to the unnamed country's agency, and also provide operator training, service and warranty support.
The Z Backscatter is a portable X-ray system located inside a van and can detect drugs, weapons, contraband and stowaways. It can X-ray image an object while driving past it, and can be operated remotely.
Separately, the company reported fiscal fourth-quarter earnings fell more than 50 percent, as research and development costs rose. Results missed Wall Street expectations.
Shares fell $6.93, or 14 percent, to $42.67 in aftermarket electronic trading, from their close at $49.06 in the regular session.
