Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal is not expected to help Becton, Dickinson's earnings in its first year.

Becton, Dickinson said the purchase adds to its offerings for customers who need advanced applications in areas such as cell therapy.

Seattle-based Cytopeia is privately held.

Shares rose 52 cents to $86.52 during aftermarket electronic trading, after closing down $2.20 at $86.
