SAN RAFAEL, Calif. (AP) - Autodesk Inc.'s profit jumped 14 percent in the fiscal first quarter as the design software maker reporter brisk sales in emerging economies, the company said Thursday.

Autodesk earned $94.6 million, or 41 cents per share, in the three months ended April 30, compared with profit of $83.3 million, or 34 cents per share, in the fiscal first quarter last year.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial forecast profit of 48 cents per share.
Revenue rose 18 percent to $598.8 million from $508.6 million. Analysts expected revenue of $589.3 million.
Autodesk makes software to help clients like media companies, architects and engineers with design. In the recent quarter, the company collected more from both licensing its software and from maintenance fees on its products.
Chief Executive Carl Bass said in a statement international markets, especially in emerging economies, are driving the company's growth. Revenue in emerging economies surged 41 percent to $101 million, representing 17 percent of total revenue.
