Wis. regulators: Power plant may hurt environment

MADISON, Wis. - A new Cassville power plant would disturb the Mississippi River bed, eliminate about 20 acres of forest and jeopardize rare mussel species.

That's according to a draft of an environmental impact statement by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, state Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Alliant Energy Corp. wants to build a 300 megawatt coal plant in Cassville. The utility has proposed building the plant near Portage as an alternative.

Regulators want public comment on the impact statement before public hearings start later this year.
