Nasdaq 100 Leaders and Laggards: APOL, LVLT

NEW YORK - The Nasdaq 100 ended lower Friday, pulled down by losses from Apollo Group Inc. and a jump in oil prices.

Apollo, a for-profit education company, declined $2.02, or 4.2 percent, to $46.71.

UAL Corp., which operates United Airlines, shed 57 cents, or 4 percent, to $13.81, as the price of oil set a new high. Fuel is one of the biggest costs for a carrier.

Electronic Arts Inc. slipped $1.92, or 3.7 percent, to $49.60, following other video game stocks when April's retail sales data for the sector disappointed investors.

The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, slipped 0.07 points to 2,031.27. The broader Nasdaq composite fell 4.88 points to 2,528.85.

On the rising side, shares of Level 3 Communications Inc. gained 27 cents, or 8.2 percent, to $3.55.

Shares of medical waste management company Stericycle Inc. rose $4, or 7.6 percent, to $56.68.

Garmin Ltd. advanced $2.82, or 6 percent, to $50.02.
