NEW YORK - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., which makes of laboratory supplies and scientific instruments, said Friday it has named group President Marc N. Casper to the newly created post of chief operating officer.

Casper has served as president of Thermo Fisher's Analytical Technologies group since November 2006. He joined the company in December 2001.

Shares rose 4 cents to $57.62.
