Sinopec keeps normal gas supply in Chengdu area after earthquake

17 May 2008 @ 02:28 am EST

After the earthquake happened in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province on May 12, China Petrochemical Corporation (CPC), or Sinopec, maintained normal operations on a number of compressed natural gas (CNG) stations in the Chengdu area, the capital of Sichuan.

At present, Sinopec supplies Chengdu with 1.3 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, which is basically the same quantity as that before the earthquake.

At the epicenter, Mianyang, the company is supplying 130,000 cubic meters per day, of which 100,000 cubic meters are going to northern Sichuan disaster relief vehicles, and 30,000 cubic meters for enterprises.

CPC's main gas fields Western Sichuan Gas Field had increased the daily production to 1.6 million cubic meters, accounting for 20 percent of the amount before earthquake.

Earlier, as the majority of chemical plants needing gas were obsolete after the disaster, more than 1,000 gas wells of the gas field were forced to stop production, and the daily output lowered to 800,000 cubic meters from 8 million cubic meters.

Sichuan is China's major natural gas field and the user's location. Sichuan's natural gas production accounting for nearly one-quarter of the natural gas production.
