NEW YORK - The Nasdaq 100 index rose in midday trading Monday after a report from the Conference Board showed the economy grew in April -however slightly -and Microsoft Corp. circled around to talk with Yahoo Inc. on a potential joint venture.
The index, which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, gained 14.05 points to 2,045.32 in midday trading. The broader Nasdaq composite added 16.17 points to 2,454.02.
Shares of Amazon.com Inc. rose $6.61, or 8.7 percent, to $83.06. On Sunday Goldman Sachs added the online retailer to its Americas Conviction Buy list, a group of preferred stocks.
Shares of CH Robinson Worldwide Inc. jumped $3.06, or 4.8 percent, to $67.19.
Shares of Chinese Internet portal Baidu.com Inc. gained $15.99, or 4.4 percent, to $380.58
On the losing side, shares of Garmin Ltd. slipped $1.57, or 3.1 percent, to $48.45. An analyst downgraded the personal navigation device maker Monday to "Hold" from "Buy."
Shares of Petsmart Inc. fell 73 cents, or 3 percent, to $23.61.
Shares of Logitech International SA shed 61 cents to $31.49.
