Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expect a loss of 3 cents per share for the period.
Hot Topic said its prediction, which compares to a loss of 4 cents per share in the same quarter of 2007, is based on expectations of flat to a low-single-digit decline in same-store sales.
The guidance also includes about 1 cent or 2 cents per share in expenses related to the company's online music initiative, Hot Topic said.
Hot Topic shares fell 13 cents, or 2.6 percent, to close at $4.84.
