NEW YORK - Shares of Calpine Corp. rose in premarket trading Thursday after rival NRG Energy Inc. offered $11.3 billion in common stock to buy the merchant power producer.
Calpine shares surged as much as $2.17 to $23.45-a 10.2 percent spike above Wednesday's closing price of $21.28. NRG shares lost 2.8 percent to $41.29 in the early going.
Myriad Genetics Inc. said Thursday it will receive at least $100 million after striking a partnership to develop and market its Alzheimer's drug candidate Flurizan in Europe, sending the stock up 6.4 percent to $49 in premarket action.
Shares of United Airlines Inc. parent UAL Corp. rose 3.1 percent to $7.48. Wednesday, the stock plummeted 29 percent as oil rocketed past $133 a barrel and continued its climb to $135 Thursday, and after two analysts cut their earnings outlooks for the industry.
Network storage company NetApp Inc. lost 10.4 percent to $23.12 as investors reacted to a disappointing fiscal first-quarter outlook late Wednesday that fell short of Wall Street's expectations.
