WASHINGTON - Clear Channel Communications Inc. spent more than $760,000 in the first quarter lobbying against the combination of two satellite radio companies and on other issues, according to a disclosure form.
The company, like most of the broadcast radio industry, opposes the proposed $5 billion acquisition of XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. by Sirius Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. That deal was cleared by the Justice Department in March but still needs approval by the Federal Communications Commission.
The company, which owns more than 700 radio stations and operates a billboard advertising division, also lobbied the federal government on legislation involving broadcast indecency, media ownership rules, and royalty payments to performers when their music is played on the radio.
In the first quarter of this year, San Antonio, Texas-based Clear Channel lobbied Congress and the Federal Communications Commission, according to the form filed April 21 with the House clerk's office.
