NEW YORK - The Nasdaq 100 index rose Tuesday as oil prices fell and investors considered a surprisingly upbeat report on April sales of new homes.
The index, which is comprised by 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, rose 36.48 points to 1,995.44. The broader Nasdaq composite rose 36.57 points to 2,481.24.
UAL Corp., which operates United Airlines, rose 66 cents, or 8.8 percent, to $8.18. Fuel is one of airlines' biggest costs, and shares often trade opposite oil prices.
Shares of semiconductor manufacturing equipment maker LAM Research Corp. advanced $2.49, or 6.5 percent, to $40.54.
Virgin Media Inc. rose 77 cents, or 5.1 percent, to $15.80.
On the losing side, shares of Chinese advertising network operator Focus Media Holding Ltd. declined $1.30, or 3.5 percent, to $36.36.
Yahoo Inc.'s stock declined 72 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $27.
Steel Dynamics Inc. declined 84 cents, or 2.3 percent, to $35.05.
