BOTHELL, Wash. - SonoSite Inc., which makes hand-carried ultrasound devices for doctors and health care workers, said Tuesday that General Electric Co. filed a lawsuit last week seeking to invalidate the company's U.S. patent for the hand-held ultrasonic instruments.
The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin on Thursday.
"We strongly believe that there is no legal basis for this lawsuit and we will proceed firmly ahead to defend our legal rights," said SonoSite President and Chief Executive Kevin M. Goodwin.
SonoSite said the latest lawsuit is the second filed by General Electric against the company, alleging patent infringement. GE sued SonoSite in the same federal court in Wisconsin on May 15, 2007, alleging that the company infringed certain of its patents.
SonoSite has argued that the patents in question are either invalid, not infringed, or both. The company has also filed counterclaims alleging that GE and its affiliates infringe four SonoSite patents covering various core technologies related to ultrasound.
SonoSite introduced its fourth generation of hand-carried ultrasound products in October 2007.
