NEW YORK - UAL Corp. ended with the biggest loss on the Nasdaq 100 index on Monday after the airline said it abandoned its latest attempt to combine with US Airways, helping send the index to a lower close.
The Nasdaq 100--which includes 100 of the largest nonfinancial securities listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market--lost 25.73 points, or 1.27 percent, to finish at 2,006.84.
UAL, the parent company of United Airlines, called off its attempt on Friday to merge with US Airways and create the world's largest carrier. Shares lost 66 cents, or 7.7 percent, to $7.88.
Shares of China-based Focus Media Holdings Ltd. declined $2.73, or 6.8 percent, to $37.56.
Billboard advertising provider Lamar Advertising Co. gave up $1.94, or 4.6 percent, to $39.91.
The gaining stocks were led by Garmin Ltd., which makes global positioning system devices. Shares rose $1.92, or 4 percent, to $50.57.
Construction and engineering services provider Foster Wheeler Ltd. added $1.46 to $77.63.
Virgin Media Inc. gained 25 cents to $15.94.
